Do you make any of these common e-bike cleaning mistakes?

We all want our e-bikes clean and in top shape to ensure optimal performance and enjoyable rides. For many, cleaning becomes a regular task. However, improper cleaning techniques, whether due to time constraints or the wide array of cleaning products available, can inadvertently cause damage. To help you avoid costly repairs, we've outlined common mistakes that could harm your e-bike—and how to prevent them.

Common mistake 1: Using a power washer

This may seem like a good idea to remove dirt and grime quickly, but as an e-bike owner you must reconsider using a power washer to clean your bike. Although the electrical components are water resistant and can handle rain or a light rinsing, high-pressure water from a power washer is too powerful to use on an e-bike and can penetrate these parts, causing short circuits and loss in functionality.

Top tips: Instead, use a gentle stream of warm water and a cloth to remove dirt and grime from the frame, being careful to avoid direct contact with the electrical components. For those parts, simply wipe them down with a damp cloth.

Common mistake 2: Unsuitable cleaning products

Using strong chemicals can wreak havoc on your e-bike's metal and plastic components. For example, bleach is corrosive and can damage metals like aluminium, which is what our e-bikes are made of. Additionally, strong cleaners can damage plastic parts, like of the seat clip and display.

Top tips: Stick to soapy water or a bike-specific cleaner. This will keep the metal and plastic in top condition without causing damage.

Common mistake 3: Not drying your e-bike

Just like you wouldn't leave your e-bike outside in the rain, you shouldn't leave your e-bike wet after cleaning it. Lingering moisture can lead to rust and other damage, potentially putting electrical components at risk.

Tips: Always dry your e-bike thoroughly with a towel or cloth after washing it or if you've ridden in the rain. Think beyond the frame and dry all those metal areas including nuts and bolts, and the chain.

Common mistake 4: Neglecting hard-to-reach areas

It's easy to overlook hard-to-reach areas including the motor, battery, brakes, and cassette, however, all these parts need attention too to keep your bike working at its peak! Dust, debris and grime can all accumulate in these places over time and can cause performance issues if not properly cleaned.

Top tips: Consider using compressed air (for example canned air, a hair dryer, or handheld leaf blower) to blast dust and moisture out of tight spaces. For the cassette, considering using pipe cleaners, a toothbrush or similar items, these can be very effective for reaching between the gears and removing grime. If you're riding a bike with a chain, be sure to lubricate this again after cleaning. If you have a Gates Carbon Belt or other belt drive, you're in luck – these require much less maintenance!

Common mistake 5: Over-washing

While it's important to keep your e-bike clean, excessive washing can actually be counterproductive and lead to increased wear and tear. This is because washing can strip away lubricants and protective coatings, leading to increased friction and premature wear of moving parts.

Top tips: Only wash your e-bike when necessary. Regularly dusting it off and wiping down areas with a damp cloth will help maintain its appearance without the need for frequent full washes.

Common mistake 6: Ignoring proper cleaning order

The sequence in which you clean your e-bike matters! Starting in the wrong areas can spread dirt onto already clean parts, making your job more difficult.

Top tips: Start by cleaning the frame and large surfaces at the top before moving down to smaller components like the drivetrain, belt (or chain), and cassette. This ensures you are not pushing dirt into more delicate areas as you clean.

The cost of these mistakes

Any of these mistakes can result in increased wear and tear on your e-bike, reducing the lifespan and functionality of your e-bike. Water damage, corrosion, or grime build up can lead to costly repairs or worse, having to replace your e-bike entirely. When it comes to cleaning your bike, think smart to ensure you avoid these pitfalls and keep your e-bike in peak condition!
